A Conversation with National Artist Imelda Cajipe Endaya

The University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies invites everyone to a special conversation with Imelda Cajipe Endaya, the first woman to be named National Artist for Visual Arts, on 6 October 2026 (Tuesday), 1:00-4:00 PM at the UPCWGS Conference Room.

A feminist, visual artist, activist, writer, and curator, Cajipe Endaya works primarily in printmaking, painting, and mixed media. She co-founded KASIBULAN (Kababaihan sa Sining at Bagong Sibol na Kamalayan), the Philippines‘ first women’s visual and performing arts collective. She also initiated and served as the first editor of Pananaw: Philippine Journal of Visual Arts and was active in the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) Committee on Visual Arts.

Joining her in this conversation are UP Department of Art Studies professors who have closely engaged with her work through the years: Prof. Flaudette May V. Datuin, editor of Alter/(n)ations: The Art of Imelda Cajipe Endaya and author of Home Body Memory: Filipina Artists in the Visual Arts, 19th Century to the Present; Prof. Eloisa May P. Hernandez, author of Homebound: Women Visual Artists in Nineteenth Century Philippines; and Assoc. Prof. Eileen Legaspi Ramirez, a longtime collaborator of Cajipe Endaya in publications and exhibitions such as Pananaw: Philippine Journal of Visual Arts and Densities: Making Sense of Dense Cities.
