UP Center for Women's and Gender Studies

Research Grant

The UPCWGS Research Grant aims to support cutting-edge research that advances critical knowledge on women and gender issues in the Philippine context. By funding innovative and socially relevant studies, the grant aligns with the Center’s broader mission to lead in the development, promotion, and dissemination of feminist and gender-sensitive scholarship. Through this initiative, the UPCWGS seeks to foster academic work that challenges dominant paradigms, offers new insights, and contributes to policy advocacy and transformative social change.

Grantees are expected to complete their research within a six-month period. Following the research phase, an additional two-month writing period is allotted for the completion of a journal article and a policy brief. After this, the journal article will go under review with the Center’s journal, the Review of Women’s Studies (RWS). The researcher should accomplish the revisions set by RWS based on the journal’s timeline. This structured timeline ensures the production of high-quality academic outputs that can contribute meaningfully to ongoing scholarly and public discourse.

Eligibility. The sole researcher, or at least the project leader of the research team, must be a regular employee of the University of the Philippines.

Selection criteria. Research proposals will undergo a rigorous review process and will be evaluated based on several criteria: timeliness/ relevance of topic, creativity of approach, methodological soundness, contribution to knowledge, potential social impact, and effectivity of writing style.

Terms and conditions. Successful applicants will receive their funding in stages to ensure accountability and sustained progress. An initial 20% of the total grant amount will be disbursed at the beginning of the project. The remaining funds will be released in four tranches, each tied to the timely submission and acceptance of key deliverables: three bi-monthly progress reports, a journal article accepted for publication in the RWS, and a policy brief summarizing the study’s implications and recommendations.

Release of call. The call for proposals is issued annually and is widely disseminated through the Center’s official social media channels, website, and mailing list. Researchers interested in applying or receiving updates are encouraged to subscribe to the mailing list by contacting: [email protected].
