As part of its celebration of Women’s Month, the University of the Philippines Center for Women’s and Gender Studies (UPCWGS) conducted The Feminist Gaze: Lecture on Feminist Photography in the Digital Age on 9 March 2026 at the UPCWGS Conference Room. The lecture examined the role of photography in shaping cultural narratives, representation, and visual politics.

Facilitated by Dr. Eloisa May P. Hernandez of the Department of Art Studies, College of Arts and Letters, UP Diliman, the discussion revolved around the concepts of male and female gaze, analyzing how visual media historically objectifies women, and how feminist photography challenges these dominant perspectives. Through theoretical discussion and photographic examples, the session demonstrated how photographers can use visual storytelling to present women’s lived experiences, agency, and social realities. Dr. Hernandez also addressed the implications of emerging digital technologies, such as photo manipulation, AI, and deepfakes, and their potential impact on authenticity, representation, and ethical practices in photography.
